Over this past summer, Dr. Michael G. Pass had the opportunity to participate in and complete the Inside-Out Program (IOP) training. The IOP and its philosophy is an evolving set of projects creating opportunities for dialogue between academics, students, and the incarcerated in a correctional setting. It emphasizes, through constructive dialogue and education, the transformation of how we can humanize and think about crime and justice, and related social issues (e.g., social Justice and racial equity, policing in communities of color and, mass incarceration and disproportionate incarceration). This philosophy reaches across disciplines.
Specific benefits of the IOP for Lincoln University students include gaining access to and learning from non-traditional experts who actually experience the effects of the criminal justice system, and those with diverse lived experiences. The IOP curriculum and tradition does not force conclusions related to an agenda about a particular subject. Students are allowed to arrive at their own conclusion(s) on the IOP course materials.
Using an interdisciplinary approach, with interested students who would receive course credit, and with administrative, it is anticipated for Lincoln University launch of the IOP into a correctional facility, targeted for the fall of 2022.
