Beyond the Visible

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – TEDxLincolnUniversity is an innovative conference taking place this Saturday, Jan. 11, from 11 to 3 p.m. at Lincoln University’s Ware Center Theater in Lincoln University, Pennsylvania.

tedx-combo-350w.jpgAs the first TEDx event at the first HBCU, TEDxLincolnUniversity will showcase powerful TEDx talks that work to uplift our community and promote ideas worth spreading. Throughout the day, there will be catered food, live performances, networking opportunities, and interactive activities.

The theme, “Beyond The Visible,” was inspired by Lincoln’s long and meaningful history. Founded in 1854, Lincoln University is rich in culture and history and the excellence it has inspired and created goes far beyond what meets the eye. “Beyond The Visible” will capture the essence of that history and will inspire the audience to think and act in ways that challenge our initial thoughts and expectations in order to fully realize our potential to make a positive impact on ourselves and others.

The speakers will include:

  • David Amadio, who teaches creative writing and composition at Lincoln University, where he also edits the campus literary magazine, SIMBAA. His TEDx talk with describe his experience finding discipline and independence—through a flip phone!
  • Mercedes Smith is the founder of Care More, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping the homeless community which has gained recognition from Oprah Winfrey and BET Networks. Here TEDx talk will focus on homelessness and the idea of caring more.
  • Elizabeth Hillman, Ph.D., professor of biomedical engineering at Columbia University, is also a member of Columbia’s Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute. Here TEDx talk will outline the importance of using questions to challenge our assumptions and how those questions have helped her to work towards major advancements in neuroscience and biomedical technology.
  • Max Korten, a former research and assessment coordinator at Lincoln University, is an assessment specialist at Strayer University. He hopes that his TEDx talk will inspire positive change within others.
  • Jonathan C. Harris is an author of both adult and children’s books and founder of #GiveAuthorsAChance, which encourages kids to read more and be exposed to more authors. His TEDx talk focuses on the value of writing, publishing, and pushing one’s creative outlets forward.
  • Johanna Greeson, Ph.D., is an associate professor of social work at the University of Pennsylvania who is passionate about reforming the child welfare system. Her TEDx talk is about healing the aging-out crisis affecting youth in foster care.
  • Kayra Clouden is an artist, producer, writer, and actress from the U.S. Virgin Islands who is working in development at MTV and VH1. Her TEDx talk details an impactful philosophy that teaches people to use their relationship with “bad faith” to the benefit of their goals and creative expression.

"I am looking forward to showcasing really impactful ideas, and I hope that they shine light on the excellence that Lincoln University has to offer,” says Lincoln student Kirk Henderson a graduating political science major from Baltimore, Maryland, who, along with Lamar McMillan an English liberal arts major from Bowie, Maryland, is the co-founder and co-organizer of the TEDx event.

The conference will also have an intermission featuring games, food, and activities that encourage people to network, interact with the venue space and think "Beyond The Visible;” and a solo vocal performance.

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to “Ideas Worth Spreading.” The two annual TED Conferences invite the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes or less. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED has also established TEDx: a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.
