Al Valentine’s journey began at Lincoln University, the nation’s first degree-granting Historically Black College and University (HBCU). During his time at Lincoln, Al’s passion for innovation and education flourished as he pursued a degree in theoretical physics. His academic excellence and pioneering spirit led to the creation of the university’s Media Center, leaving a lasting legacy.

Revolutionizing Digital Imaging at Eastman Kodak

After graduating from Lincoln and Drexel University, Al Valentine embarked on a trailblazing career at Eastman Kodak. As the youngest principal researcher and the first HBCU graduate in research, he played a pivotal role in developing the digital camera and the X-ray viewing station, revolutionizing the field of digital imaging.

Championing Education and Research

Al Valentine’s commitment to education and research extended beyond his achievements at Eastman Kodak. He continued to break new ground, helping to establish the Center for Artificial Intelligence at Howard University. As a co-creator of the first and only HBCU-based University Affiliated Research Center (UARC), he opened doors for HBCU researchers to make significant technological advancements.
